App Predicts How Much Xmas You Can Afford
Do you have a budget for Xmas spending this weekend? The recession hurt 95% of Americans according to the report “Standing on Shaky Ground” prepared by the Rockefeller Foundation and Yale University released this week (and not the Delbert McClinton song of the same name.) More than 50% of families with household incomes of $60,000 to $100,000 experienced the inability to pay for at least one basic need (e.g., food, shelter). Approximately 50% of all American households would not meet basic needs for more than 2 months if income were to suddenly cease; 20% would last for only 2 weeks.
The Daily App Show recently praised splash’em’s iphone app Xmas $trak as “an intelligent way to track spending by category and as a percentage of annual income.” Reviewer Jerad Hill calls it a “very cool application, indeed. I love this angle.” (review)
The angle is to include everything-travel, clothes for the school play, seasonal groceries and beverages, and decorations – not just gifts in your budget. Xmas $trak gives users a visual pie chart of how much is spent per category.
The surprise to many consumers it the cost of Xmas as a percentage of annual income. Using Xmas $trak demonstrates that visually as well.
Consumers will know if that number starts to be 2% or 10% or 15% of annual income. Whatever the percentage, consumers will have the facts to determine if that is a feasible expenditure for their circumstances. For some it will be affordable. Others may want to read Dissing Xmas on which the app is based. It is available in paperback through amazon and bn.com and as an ebook on kindle and the nook.

Beethoven’s Reimbursable Healing
Patients have recognized for millenia that music heals the body as well as the soul. Current American health care requires treatments to be evidence-based; they must be recognized by the scientific community as valid therapeutic tools based on rigorous research and clinical trials. Once determined to be a valid evidence-based treatment, music therapy in its many forms becomes eligible for health insurance reimbursement and an integral part of patient care.
Music therapy is already recognized by some states as a reimbursable medical expenditure. Research funds have been made available for the study of neuromusic which is the discipline of music and neurology. It uses neuroimaging, neuroautonomic testing, and kinematics to determine the specific role music plays in healing.
Still, as Dr. Kamal Chemali writes in the April 2010 issue of Music and Medicine, musical emotion is not quantifiable much like faith and love. Chemali calls for both continued research by scientists and the inclusion of musicians in training of the neuroscience of music.
Happy Birthday Beethoven (12/16/1770 – 3/26/1827)! Here’s a bit of his 7th Symphony:
